Hans Joas is Ernst Troeltsch Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Theology at Humboldt University in Berlin and Visiting Professor for Sociology and Social Thought at the University of Chicago. Joas is a Fellow at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Studies in Uppsala and a full member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Joas›s research interests include U.S. pragmatism, sociology of religion, sociology of war and violence, and value studies - here, for example, his theory of the affirmative genealogy of values with a focus on human rights. Joas‹s work has an interdisciplinary influence and has received numerous awards. Joas is, for example, the recipient of the Max Planck Research Prize, the Bielefeld Science Prize (›Niklas Luhmann Prize‹), and the Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award for the History of Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association.
