Nilüfer Göle is a professor of sociology at the École des hautes études en sciences socialesin Paris, France (EHESS). She was previously a Visiting Scholar at MIT in Massachusetts and has taught at Bosphorus University in Istanbul, the New School in New York, the Van Leer Institute in Jerusalem, and other universities. Göle›s research areas include the Islam, public space in relation to gender, and art. A recurring theme in Göle‹s work is a comprehensive critique of Eurocentrism in definitions of secular modernity. Göle works on reinterpretations of modernism from a non-western perspective. She is the director of the Europublicislam project and PublicDemoS project at EHESS. She is a recipient of the European Research Council Advanced Investigator Grant for 2009-2013. Göle is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board at the Institut d›études de l‹Islam et des sociétés du monde musulman (IISMM), the Institut de recherche et d›études méditerranée moyen-orient and the Group of research on gender studies of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France (CNRS).
